Richard ChandlerApril 30, 2010 at 3:59 pm Patents available on line:2710649, June 14, 1955, Griswold II et al., (et al. is Hugh DeHaven), deiersbcs the three point restraint as used in aircraft where the seat back is strong enough to carry the belt loads. Volvo first marketed automobiles with only a single diagonal belt for restraining the torso. The Volvo car seat backs were not strong enough to carry the diagonal belt load, so the belts were attached to the automobile body structure. When it was found that the diagonal belt would allow the occupant to rotate out and under the belt in a crash (particularily if the door opened) a lap belt was added to the diagonal belt to form a three point restraint. Patent 3043625, June 10, 1962 go N.I. Bolin differs from the earlier Griswold patent primarily by anchoring the restraint system to the automobile body rather than to the seat. The the three point restraint systems described in both patents are essentially identical.
